My Introduction, My Disability

Earth Day

I was born on April 22. It was anything but a normal birth. I was born with a disability; a form of cerebral palsy called spastic diplegia. God had a sense of humor because, in addition, I had a hole in my heart, which left me in the hospital for six months. As a kid, I remember a comment my pediatrician made about my situation being so grim when I was born; doctors didn’t think I was going to live. I have scars all over my body and I have a long, thin tube placed inside me to treat hydrocephalus. Adversity has played an integral part building who I am.

Words

Many names have been used to describe me: brave, inspirational, courageous, fearless. The list could go on and on. The word, “miracle” has always stood out to me. That word keeps my life in perspective. I can walk, with support, speak competently, and write in between the lines. I am educated with both an undergraduate and graduate degree. I’ve had jobs, made friends, lived independently, and I can drive anywhere I want to go. I’ve probably overcome many statistics when it comes to having a disability. My greatest accomplishment was overcoming an impending death as a newborn; every day is just icing on the cake. My attitude isn’t always this; I have happy days, hard days, boring days, and don’t want to get out of bed days.

Relationship Goals

There are people with disabilities in various stages of life, that have similar challenges like me. This doesn’t include family members, friends, or parents of those individuals who are looking for answers, help, cures, or support. My hope is that my transparency and vulnerability will help those with disabilities or anyone who deals with it. Blogging is a great way to build community and relationships with others. I don’t have all the answers and it’s impossible to be everything to everyone. All I can do is share what I have to offer, which is belief. I just hope I can help someone in the midst of their journey.

Able bodies are welcome.
